Participant FAQs

What is the current study about?

The main purpose of this study is to learn about how the leadership style of one’s supervisor impacts important outcomes for their subordinates. In particular, we will be exploring the extent to which the effects of leadership style are contingent on contextual characteristics of the leader-subordinate system.

What are the requirements to participate?

There will be a series of screening questions for the leaders in the beginning of the survey which will either prompt them to continue or inform them of their ineligibility. However, some pre-requirements are that leaders and subordinates both be 18 or older and fluent in English. In addition, leaders should have at least two subordinates that they supervise.

What should I expect?

In the current study, we will be collecting data from leaders, as well as their subordinates. Leaders will be expected to complete their survey and ensure that at least two of their followers submit their surveys as well. These surveys should not take more than 15 minutes to complete and they are expected to be completed in one sitting.

How does it work?

We will be linking the two sets of surveys via a randomized code assigned to each leader. Once the leader has completed their survey, we will send a follow-up email within 24 hours of their survey completion with their randomized code, a link to the survey for their subordinates, and instructions for their subordinates to follow. Once at least two of their subordinates have completed their surveys, all parties’ duties for compensation have been met.

What’s in it for me?

For completion of the leader survey, leaders will be sent a leadership analysis via email within 48 hours of their survey completion which breaks down their leadership style into several components and shows where they stand compared to a normative sample of thousands of other managers. Once at least two of their subordinates have completed their surveys, the leader and their first two subordinates to respond will be sent $10 Amazon giftcards individually via email. Leaders will not be responsible for any costs to participate in this study. Furthermore, by participating in this innovative study leaders and their subordinates are also helping to inform cutting-edge academic research on leadership and management in organizations.

What if I do not want to continue participating?

Participation in this study is voluntary. Leaders and subordinates are free to participate in the study or withdraw their consent at any time during the study.
